My research interests include the study and theory of nonlinear dynamical systems, especially the application of low-dimensional systems to questions of weather, seasonal and climate prediction; Analysis of uncertainty in climate change prediction; Synchronisation between coupled dynamical systems; Linearised analysis (error growth, sensitivity analysis, etc.) of nonlinear dynamical systems; Applications and comparisons of methods for the assimilation of observations and model states; Construction and assessment of adaptive (or targeted) observation schemes; Construction, tuning and assessment of imperfect models; Ensemble construction (ensembles of initial conditions and/or models) and assessment; Rapid stochastic forcing in geophysical systems; Construction of data-based nonlinear statistical models; Use of laboratory experiments as geophysical analogues.
